Statistics show that every year, 5.8 million children die from hunger-related causes , that’s 16,000 young lives lost every day while more than 10 million children die of hunger and preventable diseases – that’s over 30,000 per day, or one every 3 seconds.
With the zeal to change the statistics, Rev Chris Oyakhilome set up a faith-based NGO, the InnerCity Mission for Kids. Over the years a lot has been done to improve the lives of indigent children and families across the world, especially Nigeria.
By setting up child health and nutrition programmes, The InnerCity Mission for Children is improving the quality of living as well as life expectancy, saving lives one indigent child at a time. One-third of deaths per year, most of them women and children are due to preventable and poverty-related causes; such as hunger and poor health. But every child has a right to life and through various Child Health & Nutrition Programs the InnerCity Mission for Children is improving the quality of living as well as life expectancy, saving lives one indigent child at a time.
In the InnerCityschool, the School Health Program promotes the physical, mental and social well-being of children within a school setting thus improving their ability to learn. Indeed, the promotion of the health of learners in schools is a critical step towards quality achievement in education. The InnerCity Mission for Children amongst other things, organisesMedi-Fairs, Healthy Hands Clubs, provides Health Education [for teachers, parents/guardians and pupils], distributes free Sanitary Packs and stocks the School Dispensary.
Also with the School Feeding Program a link between nutrition and learning is well documented. It is known that healthy eating patterns are essential for students to achieve their full academic potential, full physical and mental growth, and lifelong health and well-being. The InnerCity Mission for Children runs an impactful School Feeding Program that provides pupils one meal a day and in some cases, breakfast, lunch and a take-home dinner is provided.
The InnerCity Mission also has a Food Bank. A sustainable solution aimed at promoting food security amongst the poor and indigent children. It is the storehouse of food for onward distribution to those who have difficulty purchasing enough food to avoid hunger. The Food Drive is an initiative specially designed to collect bulk supplies of food to stock the Food Bank thus ensuring consistent availability of food to meet the needs of indigent children and poor families that benefit from this mission.
The plight of children and families suffering worldwide cannot be over stressed. For this reason, noble men and women have decided to partner with the President of Believers’ LoveWorld to end the problem of child poverty in our world today. “ Remember, every child is your child”- Rev (Dr) Chris Oyakhilome.
